An unbroken rule in the healthcare landscape is that change and evolution in the industry are constant. Last year was no exception as our hospitals and health systems in New Jersey and across the country faced unprecedented challenges as they continued to manage their facilities through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like many associations, The Health Care Planning & Marketing Society of New Jersey also had to modify its programs and outreach as the pandemic grew, but through it all we remained committed to our members, partners and sponsors. We pride ourselves on the relationships and value we have been able to provide our member community over the years through educational events, professional networking opportunities, award winning achievements and more. Last year was no exception.

For over 30 years our association has advanced our profession by providing policy forums, information sharing and regulatory input on a variety of legislative issues, as well as recognizing the best campaigns in health care planning, advertising, marketing and public relations through our PeRCy Awards. We will continue that legacy in 2021 and evolve as needed so that we may continue meeting the needs of the healthcare strategy and marketing community.

While we consider ourselves adept at coordinating and executing in-person events, we pivoted quickly during the pandemic and were able to host a variety of educational and professional development events virtually, including:
  • A webinar on methods to improve the financial performance of a physician enterprise hosted by Veralon;
  • A Microsoft Excel for healthcare planners bootcamp for graduate students and early careerists hosted by a strategy executive at RWJBarnabas Health;
  • A panel discussion for our Mentorship Program with three seasoned human resource executives in the healthcare space;
  • A webinar series hosted by IQVIA about utilizing business intelligence tools; and
  • A three-part crisis management workshop hosted by ACKG – Public Relations Counselors.

At our annual society meeting, which was virtual as well, we were able to present our special achievement award to Dr. Jonathan Metsch for his 30+ year service in the state of New Jersey. We also granted various health organizations winning trophies in the PeRCy Awards competition.

In addition, HPMSNJ hosted a case challenge for MHA programs in partnership with Seton Hall University and Hackensack Meridian Health for the second year in a row, with 12 graduate programs attending virtually in 2020. The case challenge was all too relevant, as students were tasked with developing comprehensive strategies to address pandemic related hurdles, such as social distancing adherence, staff optimization, and vaccination distribution strategies. We hope to continue supporting the competition and the students who participate well into the future.

Further, HPMSNJ established its first ever Mentorship Program, which felt more necessary than ever in 2020. Through the program we were able to exceed our initial matching goal and successfully matched six mentors and mentees. In October, we hosted a virtual Mentorship Program event that comprised three healthcare executive panelists in the recruitment space, who were able to provide invaluable insights on the evolution of the job market in the digital age, and how to grow and maintain a network, among other insights.

2021 is gearing up to be a busy year for the society. We plan to provide a variety of programs and webinars focused on changes in the regulatory environment, a panel discussion regarding women in leadership, a healthcare executives perspective on pent-up service demand, and more.
We are also committed to communicating with our members more often this year about our programs and networking events by using multiple marketing channels, as well as enhancing the website experience for our members and sponsors.

Finally, we remind you that we are a formal Chapter of the Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD). Through this partnership, our members can access a variety of SHSMD programs and unique benefits even if they are not SHSMD members. These benefits include discounts to SHSMD University online courses and free webinars offered on a monthly basis through their educational platform.

We are very excited about the year ahead. If you are already a member, we thank you for your support. If not, we hope you consider joining one of the oldest, most trusted and valuable healthcare membership associations in the country. We would love to have you.

Sincerely,

Roie
