HPMSNJ News
Healthcare Planning and Marketing Society of New Jersey
“The
Newsletter that Keeps our Members In The Loop”
Our Society annually bestows
a Special Achievement
Award and a Recognition Award. Both are based on membership nominations and selections by the Board Executive
Committee.
The HPMSNJ Special Achievement Award honors New Jersey-based individuals who have made a
unique or innovative contribution over a period of time to the health care
field, including planning and marketing.
President Fred Hipp
presented this award to the Continuing Education Department of the New
Jersey Hospital Association/HRET represented by Rita Pruzan, Director, along with Cecilia
Boyce and Daisy Siminoff, Educational Services Assistants. Our Society
recognized them for outstanding
contributions to the health care field through annual education programs
reaching thousands of health care professionals and their long-standing
collaboration with HPMSNJ. Our
members benefit from this partnership through the education programs, while the
Society benefits financially from the proceeds of the conferences. Rita, Ceil,
and Daisy work together as a team and were involved with us in our highly
successful fall educational conference this year.
The HPMSNJ Recognition Award honors individuals who have made
continuing contributions to advance the field of health planning and marketing,
particularly through participation in the Society’s committee work and task
forces. In so doing, they have made major contributions to fulfilling the
Society’s goals.
Fred presented the first award to Patricia H. Virga, Ph.D. As
Past-President, she has provided continued leadership to the organization,
especially during discussions around a possible merger with another
professional society. Last year, Pat initiated and developed the corporate sponsorship
program for our Society. This has helped keep the Society on a solid financial
foundation and we greatly appreciate our corporate sponsors. Fred commented,
“Pat has put her heart into this Society. The time and effort she’s devoted --
you can’t calculate. I’ve seen this working closely with her over the past
year.”
Fred presented the second Recognition Award to members of the HPMSNJ Educational Program/ Professional Development
Committee: Renie Carniol, Chairperson; Charlene Harding; James Karaman;
Elizabeth Kanabe; and ad-hoc members Tracy Johnson and Gwenn Levine, Ph.D.

This committee planned and produced three outstanding educational
programs - two in the spring and the
annual educational conference in the fall. In fact, the fall conference
reversed our three-year trend of declining registrations. This year,
registrations more than doubled– we even sold out the conference room. In
addition, through the committee’s efforts, we reached out to a new audience
this past year - public relations and marketing professionals. From
brainstorming and strategy, to program development and nitty-gritty
implementation, every member of the committee contributed to this year’s
educational successes.

President's Report by Fred Hipp, Jr.

What is HPMSNJ, where are we today and where are we going?
Over the years we have grown from an organization that was initially
primarily health care planners, to embrace many disciplines. Our Society is now
a professional organization led and managed by volunteers serving the
needs of a diverse range of professionals in the fields of health care planning
and marketing, business development and practice management, operations,
legislative and regulatory affairs, and related fields. In those disciplines,
our membership includes persons employed by health care providers and those serving
as consultants.
We began this year with the goal of securing this organization’s future
and also adapting to our current environment and membership. We explored the
possibility of merging with another professional society. However, by the end of the year, we mutually
realized that this was not in the best interest of our respective
organizations. The HPMSNJ leadership concluded that we would be able to serve
our members well as we are presently constituted, while also reaching out to
new potential members in compatible professions - most notably -public
relations and marketing.
Our OVERRIDING goal is to provide VALUE to the Society’s members through
our programs and services, including the following:
- Producing worthwhile, informative educational programs;
- Maintaining a relationship with the NJ Department of Health and Senior
Services on matters of importance to health planners and administrators;
- Communicating with members;
- Building relationships with fellow professionals—which can be much more
than “networking”.
We believe that now our Society’s future is bright: we are expanding
our membership base and welcoming new members; producing quality educational
programs; securing our financial outlook; and developing new leaders—with five
new members on the board.
In addition, we enjoyed support
from four corporate sponsors: Solucient, New Solutions, Health Strategies and
Solutions, and Vertices,
our Web site sponsor.
As we plan for 2004, I offer the following recommendations:
1.
Continue to
expand membership by attracting public relations and marketing professionals.
2.
Build on the
success of our fall educational conference by producing two ½-day sessions, one
in spring, one in fall -- in place of quarterly programs that we have done
in the past.
3. Expand e-communications.
4. Expand the Vice President’s role, adding selected duties to the major responsibility of planning for the Annual Meeting.
5. Plan for and celebrate our
Silver Anniversary.
Thank you for this opportunity to serve.

Thank you so much for electing me President of HPMSNJ
for 2004. I look forward to leading our
Society through another successful year.
Following are some important goals/plans we will be focusing on
throughout 2004:
1. Offer
our members meaningful and timely educational programs: As of right now, we do already have dates
set for two ½ day educational programs to be coordinated by our educational
program committee. Those dates are
April 23 and October 15.
2. Keep
our members informed of all Society-related news as well as healthcare industry
news: We strive to do this
mostly through electronic means as we recognize the time constraints placed on
our members. Right now, you are reading
one communication vehicle we will be using this year to ensure the value of
keeping our members “informed” is achieved - - our NEW Newsletter! This is a Special Edition being
published about our Annual Meeting. We
intend to provide quarterly Newsletters throughout the year that will include
committee-related news, Society “grapevine” news as well as healthcare industry
news.
3. Expand
our membership: Our membership
drive will begin early this year (Actually, it has already begun!!) We were
very successful with the number of new members we recruited in 2003, and I hope
our recruitment efforts are even more successful in 2004. We have started reaching out to the members
of the now inactive Public Relations and Marketing Society, and we have had
some of those members attend our programs and join as members. Hopefully, those efforts will continue to be
successful as we strive to plan educational programs to benefit health care
professionals in such fields as Business Planning, Marketing, Community Health,
and Health Policy.
4. Enhance our financial position: Our sponsors contribute greatly in helping our Society coordinate meaningful programs with great speakers and maintain our financial position. Our sponsors bring great value to our membership, and we, in return, provide value to their organizations. We hope to continue to secure our existing sponsorships, and as always, we’re doing our best to solicit additional corporate sponsors.
On behalf of our entire Society, I would just like to
say “Thank you” to Fred Hipp, Jr. for doing such an excellent job at leading
our Society as President in 2003. Fred
has devoted much of his time to ensuring the successes of the past year by
maintaining his commitment to this Society throughout the year. As your President in 2004, one of my main
goals is ensure the continued success of this Society, and I know that Fred, as
my Past-President, will help me in this effort as he continues to offer his
valuable recommendations and “lessons
learned”.
“How
to Take Smart Risks:
Savvy
Strategies for Improving Your Work & Your Life”
Presentation
by: Shari Peace, President of Peace Talks
Shari Peace is a professional speaker and an author who assists individuals in “supercharging” their work performance and achieving outstanding personal happiness. On December 12, 2003, at our HPMSNJ Annual Meeting, Shari delivered a lively and informative presentation enriched with good ideas and valuable suggestions on how we can learn to take “smart risks” at home and work. By engaging all of us in her presentation, Shari helped us understand the four steps for taking smart risks, and the key ideas and questions we should ask ourselves along each step of the way:
1. Evaluate the Risk – Most important part of evaluating is to gather as much information about the risk as possible.
2. Prepare for the Risk – Define “success”, and gather even more information to increase your chance at this success.
3. Take the Risk – Just do it! It is better to “course correct” than not to act at all.
4. Reflect on the Risk – Take a long-term view of the outcome. What did you do well or not-so-well to arrive at the outcome? And, if the desired results were not attained, what can you do next time to achieve your success?
Shari offered us some excellent handouts summarizing ways we all can encourage smart risk taking in our organizations as well as the phrases we should stay away from in the process, such as “We’ve never tried that before” or “ We looked into that last year”. And, for all of us who are constantly struggling with “Time Management”, and looking for ways to successfully balance work, personal lives, etc., Shari offered us her “tips for procrastinating less and achieving more”, and “15 savvy strategies for managing your time”. Thank you Shari!!
